Choosing the right POS System for your restaurant
Which POS System Fits Which Type of Restaurant in Canada

The "best" POS depends heavily on your service model. Here's how I'd map it, based on both the operator research and what I've seen work in practice:
FULL-SERVICE
Toast leads for full-service operations planning to scale past $1M, given its course management and floor tools — but weigh that against the payment processing lock-in. TouchBistro is the strongest alternative for excellent tableside workflow without Toast's contractual rigidity.
QUICK-SERVICE / FAST-CASUAL
Square handles high-volume, low-complexity counter service with speed and minimal setup friction. Clover is a strong runner-up for hardware flexibility (line-busting handhelds, customer-facing tipping displays).
CAFÉS & COFFEE SHOPS
Square or Clover both fit well — quick checkout and simple hardware for a menu with fewer modifiers and less complex kitchen routing.
BARS & LOUNGES
Toast or TouchBistro both handle fast tab management and floor tracking well; the choice depends on whether you value Toast's deeper ecosystem or TouchBistro's lighter contractual footprint.
DELIVERY / TAKEOUT-PRIMARY
Square's mobility and simplicity make it the natural fit for food trucks specifically. For a delivery-heavy brick-and-mortar concept, prioritize whichever system integrates most cleanly with your third-party delivery platforms.
MULTI-LOCATION GROUPS
Lightspeed is the clear leader — its ingredient-level inventory tracking and multi-location reporting outclass the competition for operators managing more than one site or a large, ingredient-intensive menu.
COMPARING THE TOP POS SYSTEMS FOR RESTAURANTS (Canada & U.S., 2026)
No system is one-size-fits-all here — each of the five major platforms below trades off differently on pricing, feature depth, integrations, and ease of adoption. The scorecard below gives you the at-a-glance view; the write-ups underneath go deeper on each.

TOAST-Full-Service & Fast Casual, Scaling Past $1M
Toast has the deepest restaurant-specific feature set of the group — course management, tableside ordering, kitchen display integration, and strong predictive-staffing AI that some operators report has reduced labour costs by 8–12% through smarter scheduling recommendations. Base software pricing starts attractively (a free starter tier and a standard plan around $69/month), but the real cost lives in the required bundled payment processing — Toast does not allow you to bring your own processor — plus proprietary hardware that becomes a sunk cost if you ever want to leave. Contracts typically run two to three years with auto-renewal clauses.
SQUARE FOR RESTAURANTS- Small, Growing Single-location and Cafes
Square remains the most accessible entry point — a genuinely free software tier, no long-term contract, and hardware (Square Terminal around $399, Square Register around $799) that's simple to deploy. The trade-off is that Square applies a flat processing rate (around 2.6%) across both credit and Interac debit transactions — and because Interac interchange itself only runs a few cents per transaction, high-volume Canadian operators end up paying Square a large margin specifically on their debit sales.
LIGHTSPEED RESTAURANT- Multi-location Groups & Inventory Heavy Concepts
Lightspeed, headquartered in Montreal and publicly traded, is a genuine Canadian success story and arguably the strongest restaurant POS built specifically with Canadian operators in mind. Its inventory system tracks down to the raw-ingredient level, enabling precise recipe costing and yield tracking, and it scales well across multiple locations. Plans start around $109–$119/month CAD, with Lightspeed Payments processing at roughly 2.6% + $0.10. The catch: it has a real learning curve, and third-party processor surcharges have been reported as high as $400/month.
TouchBistro- Independent, Single-location Full Service
Also Canadian-built (Toronto-headquartered), TouchBistro is purpose-built for restaurants from the ground up rather than adapted from a general retail platform, and it shows in the floor plan, reservation, and tableside workflow tools. Base pricing starts around $69/month CAD, but online ordering, loyalty, marketing, gift cards, and reservations are all separate add-ons — real-world total bills in the $300+/month range are common. TouchBistro Payments runs on Moneris in Canada, giving it clean native Interac handling.
CLOVER- Quick-Service & Flexible Hardware Needs
Clover isn't purpose-built exclusively for restaurants the way Toast or TouchBistro are, but its hardware lineup — the Station Duo with a customer-facing display, the compact Mini, the handheld Flex — is genuinely well designed, and its open app marketplace lets you bolt on almost any capability you need. Pricing (roughly $60–$165/month) varies significantly by reseller, which is itself worth flagging as a risk: Clover is sold through a network of independent resellers, so contract terms and effective rates can differ dramatically.
